Why Does It Takes Time to Generate a Drawing File/View?

Following could be the most possible reasons that discuses about performance problem generating the drawing file:

1.Pattern feature– If there are any pattern features with many instances in the part then suppress the feature > create the drawing. Insert a drawing view with shaded without edges display style.

Pattern Feature

Check if the options to automatically insert annotations (such as centre marks or centrelines) are selected in Document Properties > Detailing (of the drawing). If there are many pattern instances SOLIDWORKS can take a long time to insert and regenerate the annotations for the view. Uncheck these options and see if the performance is better.

2. Flat pattern configuration – As you are aware while creating drawing for the first time from a sheet metal body a derived flat pattern configuration is generated automatically. If the sheet metal features are complex it may take time to create the derived configuration. However when you create the drawing for the second time it works well.

3. Usually we use HLR/HLV/wireframe display style for drawing views. These display style need to generate more edges than Shaded with/without edges. Insert a drawing view with Shaded with/without edges compare the performance.

4. Automatically hide components on view creation. Any components of an assembly not visible in a new drawing view are hidden and listed on the Hide/Show Components tab of the Drawing View Properties dialog box.

5. For weldment and sheet metal parts cut list is created and updated automatically.

We can disable the update option from Tools > Options > Document Properties > Weldments > untick option ‘automatically update cut lists’. This may improve the performance in model and also in the drawing.

6. Use Tools > Evaluate > Performance evaluation, to know which features are taking time to rebuild. Suppress this feature check if it improves performance while creating drawing views. Some features may be time consuming and it may require more computation resource to create edges for drawing views.
