Innovation Helps Emirates Team New Zealand Sail to a 2017 Americas Cup Victory

The America’s Cup has arrived safely in Auckland after Emirates Team New Zealand’s crushing 7-1 victory on the Great Sound in Bermuda. The team’s journey exemplifies courage in overcoming adversity, and ingenuity. Intercad part of the Central Innovation is proud to be an Official Supplier of the software technology behind the innovative design that helped the team win this prestigious race.

Emirates Team New Zealand battled incredible adversity to get to this position, making their win all the more triumphant.  From a shock loss in the 2013 America’s Cup, to a late start in Bermuda, the team pulled together, thinking outside the box to deliver an outstanding result. The win has demonstrated that ultimately hard work pays off, but more importantly that great skill, great technology, and innovative thinking are true cornerstones to success.

With both teams starting the race cleanly and closely aligned to the first mark, it was anyone’s guess who would take out race honours. Peter Burling, the New Zealand helmsman and youngest winner of the Auld Mug, appeared calm and controlled as he steered his crew along the glorious waters. The defending Oracle Team USA weren’t going down without a fight, eager to tie and take the race to 10.  In the end, all their heart and soul could not overcome the determination and dominance of Emirates Team New Zealand through the 3rd, 4th and final mark as they won the race 55 seconds ahead of their trailing competitor.

Emirates Team New Zealand, were quoted during the race meet saying that “technology has played a pivotal part in the design of this boat” and their ability to “see what we could come up with have achieved some truly amazing things that have been revolutionary in this sport.”

Max Piper CEO of Central Innovation commented, “As one of the Official Suppliers of Emirates Team New Zealand we are enormously proud of our association and ability to continue to support their 20 year history of using SOLIDWORKS.”

By succeeding in bringing the America’s Cup back to New Zealand, we can all agree team work, determination and innovation have played a vital role in delivering a successful triumph. We look forward to following and supporting the Emirates NZ team in the 36th America’s Cup journey where we can surely expect a memorable event.
