Triple Eight’s Champion 2016 Season

Triple Eight Race Engineering Claim 1st, 2nd and 4th in the 2016 Supercar Championship

Shane van Gisbergen has taken first place in the V8 Supercars Championship at the Coates Hire Sydney 500 this weekend, finishing 200 points over team mate Jamie Whincup. In his maiden year with Red Bull Racing Australia and his ninth full-time season in the V8 Championship, Van Gisbergen has finally fulfilled a “lifetime goal”.

This result comes as no surprise as both Van Gisbergen and Whincup have dominated the 2016 season from the start. Whincup has been the most consistent throughout the season, being within the top three of the championship position throughout the course of the championship; however a late surge of victories from Van Gisbergen proved to be too good for Whincup.

“I’m incredibly happy for my teammate Shane van Gisbergen – any Championship win is a huge result, especially your first one. The team that takes out the Championship is the one that has been the most consistent performer over the year and that’s definitely the case for team #97 (Van Gisbergen)” said Whincup.

Also in close contention for a podium finish was Triple Eight Engineering team mate Craig Lowndes, who finished 4th in the championship for Team Vortex after a tight battle for third with Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Scott McLaughlin. Although the Triple Eight trifecta fell short by one position, Lowndes is confident that he and his team can finish with a similar result next year.

“As a team, we set a goal to be in the top five in the championship this year. We ended up fourth – we probably could have been third – but to finish fourth this year was a great achievement and gives us something to work on for next year” said Lowndes.
